I originally purchased a smaller hydroponics unit from another seller on Amazon and really enjoyed the concept. I was so impressed by the growing method that I decided to upgrade to this larger model. Although it has 17 planting positions, I only used 9 because I wanted to grow tomato plants, which I understand need more space. I was initially concerned about the water circulation, as the pump doesn’t include tubing to evenly distribute flow. However, based on the rapid growth results, that concern turned out to be minor—eight out of nine plants sprouted within just three days. The one that didn’t—parsley—has a longer germination period of about 21 days, so I’m still waiting patiently. The tomato plants have already progressed into healthy seedlings, and overall, the system looks very promising so far. Getting the light cycle set up correctly took a little trial and error, as the 16-hour timer starts when the system is first plugged in. I initially installed the unit at night, which led to a lighting schedule that didn’t quite suit my routine. Thankfully, I discovered that using the on/off switch briefly can re-sync the lighting timer without having to unplug the unit. That said, I would have appreciated a more explicit way to control the light schedule for greater flexibility. Update – 2024-03-17: One downside I’ve encountered is the water level window—it’s essentially useless. Although it looked fine from the outside, the unit began gurgling, and when I opened it, it turned out it was almost dry and needed about 3 liters of water. I now find myself refilling it with roughly 2 liters every 3 days. On the upside, the grow light performs beautifully, and my tomato plants have grown to over 2 feet tall. I had to gently bend them away from the light to avoid scorching the leaves. I also planted arugula and romaine lettuce, all of which sprouted well, along with parsley and thyme. Only two holes remain unused, and at this point, I’m considering getting a second unit just for lettuce, since plant height has become a major factor.

I purchased two of these Growell hydroponic systems with high hopes, and overall, I’ve had a mostly positive experience—though not without a few hiccups. Within the first month, one of the units experienced a pump failure, which was definitely frustrating. A pump is such a vital part of the system, and I expected it to last much longer without issue. I’ll need to reach out to Growell support to see about a replacement, which I hope will be handled smoothly. That said, the rest of the build quality and components feel solid and well-constructed, so I’m hoping the pump failure was just a one-off issue. I still believe in the product’s potential, especially given how well the second unit is running. Outside of that one issue, everything else about this system is genuinely impressive. Setup was straightforward, and within a few days, my seedlings began to sprout. The lighting system is powerful and consistent, helping the plants grow quickly and evenly. The layout is intuitive, making it easy to manage nutrient levels, plant pods, and lighting schedules. I’ve been able to grow a variety of plants, and it’s incredibly rewarding to watch them thrive in a controlled, indoor environment. Growell clearly put thought into user experience, and it shows once everything is running properly. As for plant selection, it’s important to understand the spatial limitations. I attempted to grow tomato plants, and while they grew beautifully at first, they quickly outgrew the available space. These systems just aren’t built for large or vine-like plants, which need more vertical and horizontal room to flourish. Managing the overgrowth became difficult, and I eventually had to remove them. The same goes for peppers—they’re still growing and doing fairly well, but even they are starting to push the limits of the upper tier. The kit came with what appears to be a generous supply of nutrients—likely enough to last at least a couple of months, depending on how many plants you’re growing. The included guide on how to mix and feed the nutrients is incredibly helpful, especially for beginners like us. We followed the feeding schedule closely, and within just a few days, every one of our seeds had sprouted. It’s rewarding to see such fast results, especially compared to traditional gardening, which often takes longer to yield visible progress. The growth has been so rapid that we’re now planning to add a small fan to the setup to help strengthen the stems and prevent the plants from getting leggy or weak.
